✅ 3 Rules of Freelancing 1️⃣ ALWAYS have a contract. Not “sometimes,” not “just for big projects,” but ALWAYS. A contract isn’t just a formality — it’s a tool that ensures everyone knows where they stand, preventing miscommunications and misunderstandings. It sets clear expectations, stops “Oh, I’ll pay you next week” from turning into “Oops, I forgot… forever,” and protects your time, your money, and your sanity. Plus, nothing screams professional like having a client sign on the dotted line. 2️⃣ Develop a thick skin. Clients will ghost. Edits will come back that make you question your entire career. Someone, somewhere, will say your rates are “too high.” Shrug it off, keep it moving, and remember: criticism doesn’t pay the bills, but your resilience does. 3️⃣ Run your business your way. The beauty of freelancing is that YOU get to call the shots. Want to work mornings and nap in the afternoons? Do it. Want to say no to soul-sucking gigs? Say it loud and clear. Do you need an industry expert to write for your business? No. a copywriter or marketer doesn't have to be an expert in your industry. They just need to be an expert in theirs. Do I specialise in certain areas? Yes. I specialise in healthcare because I'm a lung health campaigner, was a communications officer for NHS, and was previously a medical transcriptionist. I specialise in law because I studied media law as part of my degree. I specialise in hospitality because I used to be a chef. I know these areas particularly well because of my previous experience. But I can write about anything and writing about different industries actually helps. For example, I was writing an article on electric vehicles for my logistics client. I could add my knowledge on ESG and scope 3 emissions from working with my environmental consultancy client. Also, when you're not an expert in an industry, it helps you to have a fresh set of eyes. Many industries are in their own bubble so much that they forget not all of their audience is going to understand some of it. What do you prefer for your business? Hiring a specialist writer or not?

***Website tip for Health Practitioners*** One of the easiest ways to build trust with potential patients is by having a “Meet the Team” page on your website. Healthcare is very personal and patients want to know a little about the people who will be delivering their care. In particular, they want to know: 🤔What their practitioner looks like (do they look pleasant and friendly?) 🤔What their skillset / special interest is (can they help?) 🤔A little bit of personal info (do I have anything in common with them?) If you want to build trust and increase patient bookings, take the time to create a Meet the Team page. Here are some tips: ✅Include a gallery of photos of all your staff, including those who work in admin. This helps break down resistance around booking an appointment. ✅Ensure your staff look friendly and relaxed in their photos - no one wants to visit a cranky-looking health practitioner. ✅Take photos on the same day and with the same background to avoid jarring colours and busy backgrounds that will clash with your website design.  ✅Don’t photoshop your team to make them look like models. Patients want to meet real people! ✅Write a little bio about your staff that includes info on their qualifications, skills or interest areas, and how long they’ve been at the practice  ✅Try to include a snippet of personal info - e.g. hobbies, where they grew up, what they do to relax, do they have family. There are several reasons I don't talk much about copywriting on here, even though it's essentially what I'm 'selling'.... 1. My clients want to know I can write so they can hire me as a writer. This means I get to chat about anything on here and still show my craft. 2. They are not interested in hints and tips on how to do it themselves. If they were, they'd Google it or take a course. 3. Copywriting is a passion of mine, but it's not my only passion. If I limited myself to just writing about copywriting, you'd only be seeing a fraction of who I am. 4. If I talked about copywriting all the time, I'd only attract other copywriters. While I love my fellow copywriters dearly, they are not my target audience. 5. People buy people. I hardly ever talk about what I do, but I do talk a lot about who I am. I share my life, my values, and my inner thoughts. And guess what? It works - I'm not struggling for work. I'd highly recommend just being yourself on here warts and all. It's a game-changer for sure. Becky x

The moment that changed the trajectory of my freelance medical writing business ⬇️ ❌ When I stopped thinking as just a writer ✅ And started thinking as a businessperson The “just writer” me: • Would be eager to jump onto any project • Would say “yes” to any compensation offered • Would get stressed out during the idle times of the business 👎 I was being paid one-third of the market standard, and I was getting extremely tired of doing projects that were outside my area of expertise. The “businessperson” me: • Doesn’t say “yes” to every project • Negotiate the compensation, if required • Take time to do prospect research and do targeted marketing • Work on building genuine relationships with prospects and clients • Use the idle time to create opportunities for the business to grow (coaching, books, newsletter) When you start freelancing, it is very easy to be lured by the paycheck. No, I’m not saying we’re out here saving lives (unless your blog post on avoiding burnouts really changed someone’s morning). But the process? Pretty similar: diagnose the problem, treat it, and then follow up to make sure you nailed it. Let me explain: 1. Diagnosis: What’s the Problem Here? Like a doctor asking, “Where does it hurt?” we writers start with research. Who’s the audience? What keeps them up at night? Skipping this step is like trying to figure out what’s wrong with your car by kicking the tires—you might look busy, but nothing’s getting fixed. 2. Treatment: The Magic Fix This is where the cure comes in—the content. Whether it’s solving a problem, making someone laugh, or giving them just enough information to sound smart at a dinner party, your words are the remedy. And like any good treatment plan, your content should be clear, easy to follow, and not leave anyone scratching their heads (or unfollowing you). 3. Follow-Up: Did It Work? Doctors schedule follow-ups; writers check analytics. Are people reading? Clicking? Sharing? Or did they skim it like a prescription label? If your content didn’t land, adjust the treatment—shorten the copy, punch up the headline, or sprinkle in more value. So yeah, writing is kind of like healthcare. So, apparently it's #NationalFreelancersDay: who knew we had a day?! To mark the occasion, here's the top 5 things I love about being a #freelance #medicalwriter: 1) It never really feels like an actual job; 2) Working only on hand-picked projects with hand-picked clients who share my values and approach; 3) Talking to world-leading experts in everything from AI and cell line development to patient centricity and HCP education - sometimes all in the same day; 4) Learning. I am always learning; 5) Being able to choose when and where I work, up to and including WFC (working from campervan). Here's what I don't love: 1) Chasing invoices; 2) Responding to LinkedIn posts looking for freelancers, only to be totally ghosted (come on people, we only need a 'thanks but no thanks'. It's not hard!) 3) Being asked to work for 'exposure'. No thanks. I've got the skills, and I need to pay the bills... After seven years, I can definitely say that the pros far outweigh the cons.
